Iran agrees to release Indian oil tanker

Iran has decided to release MT Desh Shanti, detained by it for the past 24 days, after India said it will pay up to $1 million if it is found that the crude oil tanker had polluted the Persian Gulf.

Iran detained the ship carrying crude oil from Iraq to India on August 13, saying it was polluting Iranian waters. India has denied the allegation and, according to Shipping Corporation of India, the vessel was not in Iranian waters when it was detained. Raising strong objections to Teheran’s move, New Delhi had initiated discussions through diplomatic channels.

A Government official told

Business Line, “the Indian Ambassador in Iran has informed the Ministry of External Affairs that Iran has agreed to release the ship.”
