The new Mitsubishi Space Star will soon be available in an electric version, the Japanese-maker has announced at a presentation of the city run-about in Potsdam near Berlin.
“The car has been engineered for this technology from the outset,” said press spokesman Helmut Bauer.
He did not reveal technical details or a debut date for the green variant. Mitsubishi is trying to gain a foothold in the European mini-car segment with the Space Star sub-compact hatchback which replaces the Colt.
The electric Space Star is designed to outdo Mitsubishi’s current all-electric offering, the i-Miev, which offers 67 horsepower with a given range of up to 150 kilometres. Top speed is quoted as 130 kilometres an hour.
Until the electric version whirrs into showrooms the Space Star comes with two different three-cylinder petrol motors. These turn out 71 and 80 horsepower, with fuel consumption of between 4.0 and 4.3 litres (CO2 output: 92 bis 100 g/km).
