New York’s Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the US, was evacuating its remaining patients today due to damage caused by Sandy, city mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

“Bellevue will now have to be evacuated because of damage,” he told a news conference. “It’s going to affect something like 500 patients. They had already discharged patients that didn’t require critical care.”

The hospital, which had already been using back-up power, suffered damage in the basement, Bloomberg said.

Earlier, Coney Island Hospital and New York University Hospital were evacuated as superstorm Sandy flooded large parts of New York, knocking out power and filling basements with water.
