Global consumer appetite for luxury cars pushed Porsche’s shipment figures to a record high of 162,145, up 15 per cent from the previous year, it said on Thursday.

The German car manufacturer’s highly coveted Cayenne model made up more than half, or just more than 84,000, of the shipments, Porsche said.

Production of the Macan, a slightly smaller and cheaper sports utility vehicle, would begin in February, the Volkswagen subsidiary confirmed, adding that it aimed to sell 50,000 of the new model annually.

The company’s trademark Porsche 911 sports car made up 30,000 of the annual deliveries.

The sales figures were released after Rolls Royce and Bentley also posted record sales on Thursday, reporting increases of 1.5 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively.
