Argentina’s Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elevated to the papacy by the College of Cardinals, making him the first Pope to be elected from Latin America.

“The Catholic Church plays an essential role in my life and the lives of more than a billion people in America and around the world, not just in matters of our faith, but in pursuit of peace and human dignity for all faiths.”
“I look forward to our work together in the coming years on many important issues,” Biden said.
Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi, in a statement, said with the election of Pope Francis I, the world’s Catholics turn to a compassionate leader for the poor and a champion of the least fortunate.
“His selection is a sign of respect and admiration for the growing ranks of Catholics, indeed all people, across Latin America,” she said.
