Venezuela is to audit all remaining votes from last weekend’s election, as requested by the opposition, election authorities said on Thursday.

The audit would cover the 46 per cent of ballots not already double-checked on election night, the commission’s president Tibisay Lucena said late on Thursday.

Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles had requested a full audit of Sunday’s vote that saw him lose to Nicolas Maduro, designated heir of late President Hugo Chavez, by around 265,000 ballots, less than 2 per cent of the turnout.

Capriles has alleged that his opponent’s camp swayed the vote with intimidation and other illegal tactics.

He has also requested a full recount, and demanded that the tallies of voting receipts be compared with ballot registries and electronic votes.
