Last week, I was travelling to Delhi for client meetings and it was interesting to note the buzz in newspapers around this year's campus placement season across India.

Initial indications are that it might be better than expected. I am sure the competition for each and every job is higher than in previous years, and the questions on every student’s mind are: What should I do in the interview? How do I impress the interviewer?

On the long flight back to Chennai, I asked myself what I would look for while interviewing on campus and it was apparent that most people missed out on the basic elements.

So, here are five simple recommendations that will build your confidence and help you ace campus interviews for jobs or summer placements.

1. Do your research about the company in advance Do not use the interview to find out about the company. Research and read beforehand about the company's culture, products and services. You will be well informed and be able to engage in an intelligent dialogue with the interviewer.

2. Show why you should be hired In today's competitive job market, focus on what you have to offer. Employers look for new energy and ideas. They look for people who can multi-task, perform under pressure and show flexibility. Show that you can offer that. Your response to any given situation is also counted along with your experience, skills and abilities.

3. Do not fumble on standard and basic questions Make a list of highly probable questions and reflect on them to prepare honest responses. This is an area where most people tend to be over-confident. Be thorough on your resume, most importantly the projects you have done.

4. Listen It is important to understand the question well, listen to what the interviewer is saying. If you are not clear, ask the interviewer to elaborate or maybe even give an example. But don’t do this for every question!

5. Do not forget about non-verbal communication You must have spent hours creating the perfect resume. However, you need much more than a well-crafted resume if you want to land that dream job and that is attitude! Perfect body language can work wonders in an interview and help to create a lasting impression. After all, you have approximately seven seconds to create a first impression!

There are some simple strategies that work.

Choose formal attire as it indicates seriousness and dedication. The idea is to look good and feel good.

Wear a smile and let the radiance of confidence help form a lasting impression about you.

Make eye contact. This indicates interest and openness.

Be clear when you communicate during interviews. Use short, simple sentences to convey your points. Make sure your communication leaves a good impression.

Switch off your mobile phone , get your mind off it.

Whether you are sitting for your first interview or you have attended quite a few before, these recommendations are simple but fundamental to help you up your game, giving you the confidence to crack any interview.

Keep in mind that companies need employees like you as badly as you want that job. Good luck!
