Business schools go hi-tech

At many business schools in the US, even as the demand for MBA and other degrees is going down, more buildings are coming up. School officials say they cannot compete effectively in today's tightening market unless they construct stylish new quarters loaded with the latest high-tech gear. By one count, 18 of 20 top-ranked US schools are planning, undergoing or just finishing big construction projects with a cost exceeding $500 million .

Poverty on the rise: UNDP

The level of underemployment and the incidence of poverty have increased in the country since 1991, the year economic reforms were initiated, leading social scientists, including top-level economists, have said in a report. They, however, admit that this cannot be empirically confirmed. The report has been prepared under a project sponsored and funded by the UNDP.

Taking the Big Bull by the horns

The clever manoeuvre by Harshad Mehta to approach the Income Tax Settlement Commission for settling his income-tax cases has put the Finance Ministry in a fix. If Harshad Mehta’s application is entertained by the Settlement Commission, it would mean that he would get immunity from various penal provisions of the Income Tax Act … Interestingly, (his) move…has coincided with the transfer of Mr. Ramaswamy who was till recently Deputy Director, Investigation, and initially involved in breaking the stock broker’s computer codes giving access to various share and securities transactions. The CBDT order transferring Mr Ramaswamy were issued at a time when his superior, Mr N. Sahu, was reportedly on leave.
