The article “Law breakers as law makers” ( Business Line , December 24) is a timely eye-opener. As a society, we need to be ashamed.

Police needs to re-enact its act and protect the the common public rather than be more occupied with the safety the of the VIPs (mostly politicians). The legal process, particularly for rape cases, needs to be speeded up and convictions ordered and implemented quickly.

A high power committee of meaningful and dignified men and women must go into the root causes that make life for women totally unsafe. Women play a very vital role in society and their safety is of prime concern.

In fact, women are surely more important than men.

The nation owes it to them to make Delhi and the whole of India a safe place to live in.

Coal shortage

This is with reference to the editorial “It is action time” ( Business Line, December 24).

There is a dire shortage of coal and the situation is at present being handled through imports. So, there is an urgent need to augment the production of coal, which will be a boon to the chronic power shortage problem.

The Cabinet Committee on Investment must remove bottlenecks and accord priority for the execution of railway projects of 325 km, helping Coal India produce an extra 100 million tonnes of coal over the existing output of about 400 mt.

The CCI should identify such projects and ensure their early implementation. Executive nods to key projects in a time-bound basis are the need of the hour.
