This refers to “Corruption, in the name of law!” ( Business Line , January 9). As the author puts it, “Corruption is so endemic that its genetic code is embedded in public life.” But what we see in our public life is the collective individual DNA of all of us. Most of us use the mamool route in all walks of life and offer bribes for want of proper documents.
The bribe charges against corporate houses also reflect the culture that is so deep-rooted in our DNA. The AAP’s victory gives us hope. But can it be sustained? Only time will tell.
Gender crimes
This refers to “Gender crimes defy stereotypes” ( Business Line , January 9). Crimes are often caused by the cultural, moral and financial status of the society. When there is a fall in the standards of any or all of these factors there is bound to be a dangerous rise in crimes. We need to study the fall in values and its fallouts. The law and order set-up needs to makes a continuous study of these factors. There should be a campaign against erosion of values and educational institutions should take steps to create awareness among students.

Dismal second innings
This refers to the “Manmohan’s mea culpa ( Business Line , January 8). Singh, who scored well in the first innings (UPA-I), has performed very poorly in the second innings (UPA-II) and people have been the losers over the last five years. As a captain, he has misjudged the efficiency of his players (ministers) who sometimes had gone out of his control to play the game for their personal gains.
