This is with reference to the article “Shuffling around” ( Business Line , Oct 31). With the UPA-II government caught in a myriad of scams, and a series of missteps within its “coalition”, the desperation to change the status quo is understandable. Time is running short for this government to recover from the deep governance deficit that it finds itself in.
The reshuffle also raises eyebrows on the elevation and expulsion of certain ministers. The principal opposition party, however, is no better; its President Nitin Gadkari is under the scanner for land deals. Instead of trying to remove the taint by resorting to an independent probe, politicians, irrespective of their party affiliation, try to shoot the messenger. But while everyone wants honest politicians and government, that is not realistic. It is a pity that the aam aadmi is caught between a rock and a hard place in the run-up to the 2014 elections.

Haldia project
This refers to Mamata Banerjee’s recent decision to halt the Haldia dock project. After Singur, Haldia has fallen victim to Mamata Banerjee’s unjustified decisions. She must remember that without investors, the State cannot get back on the path of industralisation, which was its hallmark in the 70s and 80s. Her exit from the UPA government will have its repercussions on the finances of the State and future projects. While ostensibly being pro-poor, she is causing much damage to the people.
