Eight of the 10 biggest charitable donations in 2014 were made by American philanthropists, according to Wealth-X, a leading ultra net worth intelligence firm. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who donated 16.6 million shares of his company — Berkshire Hathaway — worth $2,100 million (3 per cent of his net worth) to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, topped the list.
Buffett was followed by Nicholas Woodman, American businessman and founder of the wearable video camera company GoPro, who handed over 10 per cent of his net worth totalling $497.5 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Ranking third were Hong Kong real estate tycoon brothers Ronnie and Gerald Chan, the only two non-American philanthropists on the list, who each donated 10-12 per cent of their net worth in 2014.
Giving away $175 million each to Harvard University, the two made the largest contribution ever in the University’s history. Billionaire hedge fund manager, Kenneth Griffin, ranked fifth, making a $150-million contribution to Harvard University.
