Bharti Airtel delivered well in the March quarter. Its consolidated revenue grew 8.4 per cent Y-o-Y, while profit rose 2.8 per cent. Revenue grew 4 per cent sequentially and profit rose 16 per cent.

The company’s operating margin rose to 36.8 per cent from 35.2 per cent in the December 2015 quarter. This was driven by healthy performance in both its key geographies, India and Africa.

Total minutes on network in its India operations grew 6 per cent sequentially. . Data was on firm footing, with 6 per cent sequential growth in customers.

With almost a fourth of its mobile customers being data customers, the data usage on network grew 10 per cent.

The net loss in the Africa operations narrowed to $59 million in the March quarter from $183 million a year ago and $74 million in the December quarter.

In preparation for its battle with Reliance Jio, Bharti recently acquired spectrum from Videocon and Aircel and is widening its 4G coverage. Signalling confidence in prospects, the company also announced a share buyback plan.
