Ducati’s big, muscular sports cruiser, Diavel, has been given a cosmetic and mechanical makeover, and has been showcased at the Geneva Motor Show 2014. The motorcycle was unveiled during the Volkswagen Group Night, on the eve of the International Motor Show of Geneva, by Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding.
The cosmetic changes for the new Diavel is highlighted by the new Dark Stealth livery which includes a black trellis frame and black wheels.
The Diavel Carbon, on the other hand, offers the choice of traditional Ducati Red over Matte Carbon with red frame or the new paint scheme of Star White over Matte Carbon with white frame, both with black, forged wheels by Marchesini, turned and milled to expose the natural aluminium. The headlamps are now LED, thanks to inputs from Audi. The new instrument panel also uses a lot of LED and TFT technology.
The major updates, however, are technological, which aim to push the performance up by a few notches and improve the motorcycle’s agility and stability. The Diavel models will now be powered by the latest version of the liquid-cooled, 1198.4cc Testastretta 11-degree DS engine, which squeezes out a peak power of 161.7 PS (119kW) @ 9,250rpm. This engine also manages a peak torque of 130.5Nm which kicks in at 8,000rpm. The new Diavel has also been outfitted with a new exhaust system to improve performance.
For riders who love attacking corners, Ducati has thrown in elements that improve stability. A specially engineered 240 section rear tyre combined with Ducati chassis technology and a fully adjustable Sachs monoshock rear suspension complement ABS, Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Riding Modes for a better riding experience. The dry weight of this monstrous sports cruiser, however, has been kept at 210 kg. The Diavel Carbon is lighter by 5 kilos, thanks to carbon fibre tank panels, single-seat cover, and front mudguard.
The new Diavel will join the Ducati ‘family-extension’, which include the new Monster 1200 (showcased at Milan International EICMA 2013), 899 Panigale and the extremely light and fast 1199 “Superleggera”. Both models of the new Diavel will start to arrive in Ducati stores around the world from April 2014 onwards.
