Foraying into the compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment, automaker Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has announced a new vehicle ‘TUV3OO’, which will be launched by mid-September. The company is also gearing up to launch five new vehicles in this financial year.

The TUV3OO (pronounced as TUV, 3 double ‘O’) is a sub four-metre vehicle and will compete with Ford EcoSport, Hyundai’s newly-launched Creta and Renault’s Duster. In India, compact SUV accounts for about 40 per cent of the total utility vehicle (UV) market. “For M&M, FY-16 is going to be a year of new launches. We have already launched three, and we are adding one more to that continuing journey,” said Pawan Goenka, Executive Director.

Raised shoulders, high front nose, flat roof and a straight bonnet are some of the distinct features of the new vehicle. The new vehicle, targeting mainly urban buyers, has been inspired by a battle tank. However, M&M’s South Korean subsidiary Ssangyong is not involved in the making of the TUV3OO, he added.

“We are also working on a left-hand drive and on meeting global emission norms,” Goenka said, adding M&M will also export a year after its launch.

The vehicle will be manufactured at M&M’s Chakan facility in Maharashtra. TUV3OO will be powered by the mHawk engine, developed in Chennai, said Pravin Shah, President and Chief Executive (Automotive) at M&M. TUV3OO, which has been designed with inputs from Italian car designer Pininfarina SpA, will not replace M&M’s SUV Bolero.
