Udaipur Collector Rohit Gupta tells Virendra Pandit of the challenges in implementing the Smart City Project. Excerpts from an interview:
What challenges will Udaipur face in implementing the Smart City Project?
Our main challenge is to keep intact the façade of heritage structures of historic importance in the Old City, which has 10 gates, while, at the same time, making services hassle-free and state-of-the-art. Another is to replace the old sewerage lines, and make the Walled City a vehicle-free zone.
How will you address these bottlenecks?
We will leverage the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) campaign for underground cabling and other work. We have identified parking lots outside the Old City. Some government departments will be moved out of the area to decongest it. Besides, we will make door-to-door garbage collection mandatory and segregate bio-degradable with non-bio-degradable garbage at the dumping site. We want to make all the lakes pollution-free.
What will the Smart City Project achieve for Udaipur?
Our focus is on improving the quality of life of the people and the service delivery of various government departments. The idea is to engage all citizens in this partnership. The project is expected to boost tourism and create jobs.
