Every year, some corporate event or the other marks ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on May 31 in the metros. This year, Bajaj Electricals Ltd has taken one step further to help impact some districts in Maharashtra.
It has extended its reach to rural sectors in Yavatmal and Wardha districts. Targeting community-level awareness, especially among school-going children, it has roped in local stakeholders, including the education department, health professionals, police authorities and local leaders.
It has also partnered with voluntary organisations working on the ground and taken the help of policymakers to promote a tobacco-free environment in villages.
This is a difficult task in itself, considering rural tobacco users in India are estimated to be 199 million out of the total 275 million users. However, BEL has laid a lot of emphasis on tobacco cessation since 2010, especially among its employees.
