We believe in investing in our human capital: A beloved phrase of most senior folks and one that has the hearty support of the HR folks; almost on a par with that other powerful phrase that has now become clichéd: people are our main assets. The question that remains to be answered is whether such investments are only to satisfy some parameters in a budget or are they being done with the purpose of adding value to individuals who add value to the corporate.

You need to be able to swim on your own: A macho sentiment often expressed during induction programmes. A wonderful philosophy that seemingly promotes self-actuated efforts by individuals to build character and ensure performance, while conveniently glossing over the reality that the tyros are likely to be thrown in at the deep end with no guarantee of lifeguards being present on the scene.
